The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 was the first consumer 3D digital camera to be made available on the market. Coming with an odd two-lens design, the 3D W1 comes with two 10-megapixel sensors which are used to create 3D images which can be viewed without those odd-looking 3D glasses.

Good handling and design

The Fujifilm 3D camera is a rather large camera as it comes with a two-lens design. Given its bulky size and slightly heavy weight, the W1 still easily stores in a small camera bag. The Fujifilm FinePix 3D W1 is well designed with lens cover which slides down when the digital camera is activated and the 3D digital camera is finished in black gloss.

The W1 is also comfortable to hold, regardless of its plastic body and having no actual handgrip. It’s built well and on the front of the camera we find two lenses, while on the back of the camera the device’s 2.8-inch LCD screen is found in-between the 3D camera’s controls. The controls on the camera are well placed, and all easy to find and use which comes as a definite plus for what should be a complicated 3D digital camera.

Cool features

In terms of features, the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 comes with two 10-megapixel CCD camera sensors and a two 3x optical zoom lenses with a focal range of 35-105mm. In making the 3D camera easy to use Fuji has added a Mode button, which allows users to switch between the device’s seven modes which are Auto, Natural Light & Flash, Manual, Aperture Priority, Program, Advanced 2D and Advanced 3D respectively.

A Manual mode is also included in the 3D W1, which allows more advanced users to manually adjust the shutter speed and aperture. The W1 not only takes 3D images, but is also capable of taking 2D images. Fuji has also added Face Detection and a continuous shooting mode to the W1 which allows the 3D camera to capture 40 frames at 3fps in 2D and 2fps in 3D.

Image quality

When it comes to the 2D images which the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 produces, the 3D digital camera produces images of average quality. The device does, however, struggle with noise at ISO 400. Images don’t experience colour distortions in high contrast situations and the device also works well in low light environments and at night. Images do come out slightly soft, but the Macro mode performance is fine, allowing users to focus on objects from 8cm away. The 3D images which the W1 produces are viewed on the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D V1 photo viewer and don’t need glasses which is rather cool.

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 is fun to use and produces some acceptable 2D images, and some entertaining 3D images. Going for just under £398, it’s not the cheapest camera but at the same time produces 3D images which make up some value for money. The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D V1 does, however, come separately.

Dude, can your computer read 3D images? Didn’t think so- unless you can travel to the future, either buy one or take their word for it- there is no way you can see 3d on your computer.
