The Canon Digital IXUS 210 replaces the Canon Digital IXUS 200 and comes with a cool touch screen to access the different modes and camera’s features. Canon has added a 14-megapixel camera sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens to the compact digital camera. It is also capable of recording video in HD at 720p and makes for a good starter camera.

Good build, comfortable handling

The IXUS 210 is stylish, coming with a smooth edged design, which also makes the compact digital camera comfortable to hold. The Canon Digital IXUS 210 has a smooth finish and Canon has ensured that the digital camera remains minimalist in its design. The Canon digital camera also doesn’t feature that many controls, with most of the features being accessed through the device’s huge 3.5-inch touch screen. Canon has neatly tucked away a built-in flash which only pops when the digital camera is in use. The front of the latest IXUS is mostly dominated by the camera’s lens which is positioned slightly to the right of the camera. This does mean that the odd stray finger will find its way in front of the lens now and then. The IXUS 210 is built strong and the camera’s touch screen is quite responsive.

Features

The Canon Digital IXUS 210 comes with a 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens with a focal range of 24-120mm, 35mm equivalent. In making the compact digital camera easy to use, the IXUS 210 features Smart Auto which is supported by Scene Detection technology. Optical Image Stabilisation is built into the lens and the IXUS 2010 comes with a built-in manual. The Canon digital camera is also capable of recording video in HD at 720p and comes with an HDMI port. No sort of viewfinder is provided with the Canon device, and images are framed and reviewed using the 3.5-inch touch screen.

Average image quality

The Canon compact digital camera produces images of average quality. Images are mostly hampered by noise, with noise creeping up at even ISO 200. It gets worse as the ISO speed is increased and images also lose colour and sharpness. However, on a positive note, the built-in flash works well in low light conditions with images coming out well exposed and with no red-eye effect. Images also come out slightly soft which is disappointing, but the Macro mode performance is okay allowing users to focus from as close as 5cm away.

The Canon Digital IXUS 210 comes with some fantastic features, but sadly that doesn’t translate into fantastic images.

Video Review

Description: We attended the Canon Products Press Workshop on 9th February 2010, the day after the announcement about the EOS 550D, so we were hoping that this would feature prominently at the Press Workshop. They didn't have the EOS 550D unfortunately, but they had some new IXUS cameras to show us, which included: IXUS 105, IXUS 130 and the touch-screen IXUS 210. Watch the video to see more.
