The works of Eadward Muybridge will be placed on display at Tate Britain from 8 September showcasing over 150 works from the Anglo-American photographer who was considered to be a pioneer in the field of art photography.
A historical journey
The major retrospective will be honoring Eadward Muybridge (1830-1940) and will showcase some of his most amazing work ranging from ‘his iconic images of motion to depictions of the sublime landscapes of America’. Guests to the retrospective will also be informed on how Muybridge put together some of his most famous shots and where he found inspiration to put together such inspirational images. The exhibition will not only show Muybridge’s work, but will also act as a photographic history lesson, showing how technology used during those times developed to produce the images which will be found at the retrospective.
A revolutionary figure
Muybridge is considered by many to be a revolutionary figure in photography and was born in Kingston upon Thames in 1830. He studied photography before looking for the American dream in Uncle Sam’s yard and his career had a major influence on other prominent artists such as Francis Bacon, Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly, and Douglas Gordon. One of his most celebrated works was The Attitudes of Animals in Motion 1881, which was aptly followed up by Animal Locomotion 1887.
What will be on offer
Looking at the work which will be found in the exhibition, guests will be able to view, ‘images of the Yosemite Valley, along with views of Alaska, Guatemala, urban panoramas of San Francisco, and his 1869 survey of the construction of the Eastward bound Railroad through California, Nevada and Utah’.
The major retrospective has been put together by Philip Brookman, Chief Curator, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, and curated at Tate Britain by Ian Warrell, Curator of 18th and 19th century British Art, and Carolyn Kerr, Head of Programme Management. The public will be able to attend from 8 September.
