Olympus recently put its money where its mouth is by shooting the ad campaign for the new PEN E-PL1 with, you guessed it, an E-PL1.
A smart move?
This might have been a smart move on Olympus’ part, as it yielded a pretty solid advertisement, but will consumers even notice? Video fans made a big deal about the series House being filmed on Canon’s 5D, a camera that’s accessible to the everyday videographer, but does the average consumer even care? According to Olympus, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.
The ad looks good
The ad produced by the Olympus PEN E-PL1, according to a press release, ‘explains all the amazing capabilities of the new Olympus PEN while walking through an urban landscape.’ A woman explains the camera’s features while a walk through the city lends a range of brilliant photo-perfect (or film-perfect) moments. A hang glider landing on a school bus, a Chinese dragon dance, dogs dressed as bees and a beach volley ball game are some of the rather unrealistic – to the everyday videographer – scenes she manages to capture.

Look what you can do
Stephen Mietelski, Group Creative Director at Mullen, the ad agency that worked with Olympus on the project, said that he was impressed by the camera’s image quality, ease of use in point-and-shoot video capturing, and HD video capability. ‘While developing concepts to highlight just how remarkable this camera is, we stumbled upon a simple and powerful idea: Rather than telling people “Look What You Can Do,” let’s show them what they can do with the PEN by using the camera to produce all of the campaign advertising visuals,’ he said.
Features
The Olympus PEN E-PL1 has simple controls like a point-and-shoot camera, and combines the creative freedom of a DSLR with HD filming. The camera is surprisingly small, considering its features, and packs 12.3 megapixels.
The ad, which hasn’t been released yet, can be viewed on YouTube.
