Canon’s popular IXUS series has just been expanded with the addition of the compact IXUS 300HS. It looks similar to other pocket digital cameras by Canon, but gives the more advanced photographer an opportunity for more manual control.
A shot in the dark
The Canon IXUS 300HS is the first compact model from Canon to feature the company’s HS System, combining DIGIC 4 processing with a very sensitive 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, giving you better performance in low light. For really dark situations, the ISO can be bumped up to 6,400 – but the shot would then only have a resolution of 2.5 megapixels.

Canon’s new addition to the IXUS range offers impressive 720p HD video recording, and videos can be displayed via HDMI on any HDMI-capable screen. The Super Slow Motion video mode is another nice addition, recording 340×240 clips at 240fps. You can record for either an hour, or up to 4GB.
Specs
The Canon IXUS 300HS measures a compact 3.9×2.1×0.9 inches. It has a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3-inch LCD screen, 3.8x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom, and a rechargeable Li-ion battery. It can store in SD, SDXC, SDHC, MMC, MMCplus and HC MMCplus, and boasts USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, AV out and HDMI connectivity.
The downside
The 10-megapixel sensor may seem a little low for a new Canon camera, but if you’re skilled at using the manual settings, this may not be an issue. While this model offers manual settings, they are somewhat limited – shutter speed and aperture cannot be set. This, however, could be good for portrait shots and macro mode.
The Canon IXUS 300HS comes in four shades (silver, red, black and white), and will be available in Europe at the end of May. Prices start at £379 in the UK, and €419 on the continent.

| Description: I just had to test my new Canon Ixus 300 and post my own video, showing the super slowmotion video it can take. 240 frames/second with 320x280 resolution. I remember seeing some awesome super slowmotions about fire so I tried lighting my zippo. I might take more of these slowmotions on different topics but we'll see. The camera doesn't record sound in this mode obviously. |
