Before photography went digital, the Nikon brand was already a force to be reckoned with. With the advent of DSLR cameras and their wide use by professional photographers, Nikon got into the game with the D70 model.

Don’t fix what ain’t broke, just improve it

The D90 is Nikon’s first digital single-lens reflex camera with HD video capabilities. An innovation, with a small hitch; there is no auto-focus while filming video. You must manually track your subject while it is in motion. The Nikon D90 was an invitation to other manufacturers to include video recording. This is now a standard feature with most DSLR models.

Image quality

Unlike its predecessor, the Nikon D80, this model offers excellent image quality and the world’s first digital SLR movie function. You’ll also find that you have much more control while shooting videos and still images.

The image sensor with 12.3 effective megapixels and an Integrated Dust Reduction System ensure very low-noise performance throughout a wide sensitivity range of ISO 200 to 3200.

Extras

This small yet easily handled package comes with Scene Recognition and Picture Control systems, built-in flash with 18mm lens, advanced Scene modes that automatically adjust exposure, as well as an extensive palette of in-camera Retouch. These settings will allow a superior image quality for your videos and still shots.

Compatible with HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output means that your master pieces can also be screened on most HD TVs currently available.

If you’re worried about battery life, say no more. The Nikon D90 has a great energy-saving design that allows about 850 images on a single charge. It uses a recharcheable lithium ion battery and there is an extra multi-power battery Pack MB-D80 as well as ordinary AA batteries.

Lightweight but powerful

Although the Nikon D90 is a fairly intricate camera, once you have the hang of it, it’s a dream to use. It offers high performance while being reasonably priced and unlike conventional DSLRs, you can take it pretty much anywhere.

Fun fact

The first feature film to be shot entirely with a D90 was Reverie.
