Nikon has announced that the Coolpix S8100, the successor to the Coolpix S8000, will soon be on sale in Europe.

The Coolpix S8100 comes with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 10x zoom for high-speed shooting. The camera is fast and very responsive, and is capable of HD film capture at 1080p. For shooting at night, the S8100 boasts a new processing engine – the Expeed C2 – which allows for a maximum ISO of 3200 (note that softening does occur on images taken at over ISO 200). Flash and shutter speed are also automatically adjusted to help the amateur photographer get every shot just right.

In a press release Sander van Velzen, Product Manager for Consumer Products at Nikon Europe, said: ‘The Coolpix S8100 blends superior high-speed and low-light performance, to offer sure shooting, even in challenging conditions.’

New and improved

We’re not always impressed with updates of cameras we’ve come to trust. But the S8100 offers serious improvements on the S8000, including faster performance and better handling in low light conditions. Among other enhancements, the S8100 offers better image quality and burst shooting at up to 10 fps. And coming at the same price as its predecessor, the S8100 is a very good buy for the casual photographer.

Extra features

One of the widely mentioned new additions is the camera’s compact megazoom. It has a backlight shooting function with an in-camera HDR function for hyper-realistic images. Night Landscape mode improves the appearance of shots taken in low light conditions by combining five shots taken at a high shutter speed into a single image, resulting in less noise.

Additional features aimed at making the camera as user-friendly as possible include 17 scene modes, a function that automatically adjusts the camera’s settings to any environment, a Smart Portrait System, red-eye fixing and skin softening for more flattering portraits.

Overall, the Nikon S8100 is a good buy for a camera in its price range.
