The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 was one of the first compact digital cameras to feature 3D imaging when it was released a while back with its 3D Sweep Panorama mode. In 2D, the DSC-WX5 is still equally capable and in fact is a top performer in its class, meaning that it definitely won’t disappoint.

Good image quality

According to Sony, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 is more of a DSLR-like compact digital camera when it comes to performance and they just may be right. With its 12.2-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor and 5x optical G Lens with a f/2.4 maximum aperture you can expect images of really good quality from the DSC-WX5. Colours generally look warm and appealing while sharpness is also pleasing.

Compared to images from the rest of the Sony Cyber-shot brigade one can easily say that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 may produce the best images out of the entire class. The compact digital camera also handles noise pretty well, which is another bonus.

Conservative styling

However, we can say with quite some confidence that when it comes to looks, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 isn’t as stylish as some of the other Sony Cyber-shot cameras such as the T99. It isn’t exactly ugly, but the DSC-WX5 is more conservatively styled. In hand it feels good, and the compact digital camera has a good weight to it. The mode dial does seem a little out of place and is takes a little getting used to, while the other controls are also a little cramped at the back of the camera.

Other features

In terms of features, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 comes with 1080i full HD video recording which works splendidly well and a HDMI port which makes it easy to transfer videos and images to an HD-capable display. Shooting with the compact digital camera is a breeze thanks to the Superior Auto mode which also assists in improving overall image quality.

3D functionality

If you have a 3D-capable viewing device then you’ll be able to make the most out of the 3D Sweep Panorama mode which allows users to take some really fun and sometimes spectacular images with the compact digital camera.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX5 is a really good digital camera which isn’t only easy to shoot with, but also delivers the goods with its superior image quality. Going for just under £173, the DSC-WX5 offers good value for money even when compared to the competition.
