Nikon has recently announced the latest addition to its popular S-series – the S3100. With its predecessor, the S3000, being the Europe’s bestselling camera of 2010, Nikon hopes to build on the existing popularity of the S-series with the S3100.
Slim and stylish
Following in the footsteps of other point-and-shoot manufacturers the new Coolpix is packing even more than before in it sleek and stylish body. For an entry level camera it certainly does impress with its numerous features and fun options. Thinner than its predecessors, its lines are smooth and chic, resulting in a beautiful and compact design.
Features
The S3100 has a 5x wide-angle zoom Nikkor lens with a 14-megapixel CCD image sensor, providing high-quality imaging and detail even when photographs are enlarged. It also takes 720p HD video which can be played back on its 2.7-inch LCD screen. The problem of red-eye can also be fixed in camera and it has many facial expression recognition modes.
The S3100 incorporates the Expeed C2 image processing system and this technology is a very successful Nikon development which maximises sensor performance for the highest image quality giving you vivid colours and reduced noise.
Just for fun
Nikon’s new addition doesn’t just take great images and video but it has a few fun tricks up its sleeve too. It has numerous creative in-camera filters which you can apply to your images without having to download them and you can choose between Selective Color, Cross Screen, Fisheye and Miniature Effect options. For animal lovers it has a Pet Portrait Mode will recognise animals’ faces when they face the camera and automatically take the shot.
Point-and-shoot cameras are getting slimmer and ever more stylish, with each manufacturer coming out with their own edition thinner than the last. Looking at Nikon’s S3100 and Canon’s similar IXUS 220 HS, users will have to decide which one packs more into its tiny bundle.
