The Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5 is a rugged compact digital camera, which also lays claim to the title of the world’s slimmest rugged compact camera. You can drop it, cover it in dust, drop it in the pool or leave it in the freezer and the TX5 should come out on top.

How it handles

Although Sony have designed the Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5 to be tough and rugged, it still remains visually pleasant with a small and simple body which suits the active lifestyle the compact digital camera was meant for. It’s the perfect accessory for those who want to go hiking, snorkeling, biking or maybe just want to dance the night away without a care at a really cool party. Measuring in at only 17.7mm thin, it’s amazing that the DSC-TX5 is waterproof up to 3m, shock-resistant from 1.5m and freeze proof down to -10 degrees Celsius. Overall the TX5 is a small and compact camera which handles well and is also comfortable in hand.

The buttons, though some of them are easy to access and press, can be rather small and difficult to use, like the Playback button which can only be depressed by using one’s nail. Other than that, the layout of the buttons on the DSC-TX5 makes the compact digital camera easy to use.

Image and video quality

The Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5 is fitted with a 10.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and Carl Zeiss lens with 4x optical zoom. This enables the TX5 to take good quality pictures. While the colour is just average, dark colours are as deep as they could be. Noise is also kept at bay when shooting at ISO 125 and 200 but as the ISO increasing, it also starts becoming evident that the Sony camera is working hard to keep the noise at bay.

Framing images is made easy by the Sony camera thanks to its bright and clear 3-inch LCD display with 320×240 resolution. This also means that the TX5 doesn’t have a viewfinder, which shouldn’t be that much of a deterrent to most potential buyers. However, finding faces with the DSC-TX5 is made easy with the compact digital camera’s autofocus mode. The Sony camera can also shoot up to 10 frames per second when shooting in Burst mode, which ensures that the avid photographer can find the perfect frame.

Video capture in HD is at 720p or in VGA at 640×480, and the Sony camera also comes with a handy sweeping panorama mode. This mode takes 100 images and links them together to form a video. The Cybershot’s image and video quality definitely won’t disappoint and this together with all the weird and wacky places the camera is able to take images, makes it a more than handy compact digital camera.

Overall, the Sony Cybershot DSC-TX5 lives up to its rugged tag, and doesn’t leave much to chance in the shooting department. Retailing at £257.95, the Sony camera provides good value for money and comes highly recommended for anyone who likes to take pics, while living a very active lifestyle.
