The Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD – a surprisingly well performing camera

The Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD is a superzoom digital camera which was made to look like a DSLR camera and also features the professional manual control of a DSLR device, but is actually quite a petite, and simple digital compact camera. It’s perfect for the novice photographer looking to quickly advance along the digital photography learning curve, or maybe even the more serious photographer looking for something a little smaller for those ‘covert’ shoots.

Features

Fuji have fitted the Fuji S2500HD with a 12.2 megapixels ½ 3-inch CCD sensor coupled with a Fujinon 18X optical zoom, making it the perfect companion for the photographer going to the game or on safari; or even just looking to take random pictures. The S2500HD also comes with the usual features we’ve come to see on digital compact cameras these days, like image stabilisation, autofocus mode panorama mode and others. Fuji have also made the superzoom digital camera to be able to capture video in HD at 720p and 30fps, which should come in very handy when looking for a bit more action that still images give.

How it handles

Looking at how the Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD handles and feels in hand, at first glance it looks like a DSLR, and seems to be rather bulky in design. However, this is not the case and the clever techies at Fuji have somehow managed to keep things compact and light as the compact digital camera can nearly fit in the palm of the average photographer’s hand. The buttons and all the controls are large and easy to access and use, making the S2500HD the perfect beginner’s camera.

The back of the camera is well laid out, with the buttons being nicely spaced out adjacent to the superzoom digital camera’s 3-inch LCD screen. An electronic viewfinder has also been included in the design of the camera, with purist photographers would appreciate and those who don’t like framing their images with the LCD display.

The front of the camera is dominated by the S2500HD’s lens which can be manually controlled for those moments when only manual zoom will do. Overall, the Fujifilm S2500HD handles well and seems to easily bridge the gap between a compact digital camera, and a DSLR camera.

Image quality

The Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD generally takes good pictures, and noise isn’t much of an issue until ISO sensitivity goes past ISO 1600, which is when the superzoom digital camera starts to struggle with noise. The pixels are sharp and the colour is rich to not require that much editing afterwards. When  taking images close up in Macro mode, the S2500HD performs like a champion and it also does okay when shooting in panorama mode, or using the zoom function. It can take a number of shooting jobs, and won’t disappoint in most shooting environments.

Fuji has ensured that the Fujifilm FinePix S2500HD provides a lot of bang for your buck. Retailing at only £160, it’s a definite winner when it comes to being called one of the best budget digital compact cameras around. It handles okay, takes good enough pictures and should definitely be given a chance.
