This is one of the three new superzoom compact digital cameras that Sony released earlier this year. It isn’t replacing a previous camera but is completely new. Packed full of features, almost to its detriment, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is compact for the sheer amount it holds but does hurt the pocket slightly, being the most expensive of their super zooms.

Specs

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V has been given a 16-megapixel Exmor R sensor. This is coupled with the highlight of this little camera, the 16x 24 mm wide-angled Sony G lens, to give the camera versatility and some major zooming power. There is a high speed linear focusing system which aids in focus when shooting stills or HD video and all stills and video can be viewed on a 3-inch LCD screen at the back.

How it handles

If the thought of sifting through the tons of features seems a little daunting don’t worry, the functioning of these features will far outweigh any inconvenience caused by the number of options.

The quality of the images produced by Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is excellent, both in stills and video. There is a feature to assist in any type of situation and even low light conditions are handled well by this camera. Noise only begins to appear at around 400 ISO but images are slightly soft no matter what ISO you are shooting on.

The flash output cannot be adjusted, which may annoy those who prefer to have more control when they are shooting as it tends to wash out the scene quite a lot. The control wheel is also slightly difficult to spin so this also may take some getting used to.

Fun features

It seems that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is the only compact digital camera that will let you shoot super slow HD video, which is great for sports or just a bit of fun.

The Steadyshot system works wonders and is at its best when using it with wide-angle shots. You can move around as much as you want and the image remains steady – within reason, of course.

3D images are also a great option for some variety. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V really is packed full of features but once you get the hang of this little camera you might never look back.
