Fujifilm have finally released their answer to the rugged Pentax Optio W90 which has been dominating the waterproof digital camera market for a while now. The Fujifilm FinePix XP10 is a rugged waterproof digital camera (it’s waterproof down to 3 metres) that can be dropped from 1 metre and can also withstand freezing temperatures down to -10°C while also being dustproof.

Fun, quirky design

The Fujifilm FinePix XP10 sports a quirky fun design with its two-tone exterior and wonderfully imaginative shape. The XP10 fits nicely in hand, with the waterproof camera narrowing on the one side. Even though the camera is made of plastic all around, the build is still quite tough and sturdy allow for stable handling. It looks good, and feels good. However, the Fujifilm camera might feel slightly difficult to use for some with its rather weird and small handgrip. The XP10 stood up to most of its tough claims, though it will get a bit ruffed up when dropped. The rugged digital camera has also been designed to be easy to use with the exterior of the Fujifilm digital camera only featuring eight controls.

Basic features

Looking at the features which the Fujifilm FinePix XP10 possesses we find a 12-megapixel CCD camera sensor coupled with a 5x periscopic optical zoom lens which is also protected with a special film cover. No viewfinder is provided to frame images as the XP10 comes with a 2.7 inch LCD screen. As an added bonus Fuji have also included an HD movie capture mode on the camera which records video at 720p resolution. The waterproof digital camera also comes with an upload function which allows for videos and movies to be shared on either Facebook or YouTube. No HDMI port is included on the camera, but movies can also be edited on it. The XP10 also comes the standard autofocus mode, scene modes and image stabilisation.

Simple image quality

When it comes to image quality the Fujifilm FinePix XP10 delivers nothing out of the ordinary. Noise is kept under control and the quality of the images is pretty standard and neither disappointing nor outstanding. Sometimes images produced by the Fujifilm digital camera will require a bit of sharpening with some photo-editing software as they came out slightly soft. The FinePix XP10 also isn’t the best camera when looking to take images of things close up with a disappointing Macro mode performance. Noise begins to show up at ISO 400 and worsens as the ISO sensitivity is increased and the camera’s flash also performs below par indoors. The Fujifilm camera is definitely not the best for capturing images at night, with a poor night photography performance due to its four second maximum shutter speed.

The Fujifilm FinePix XP10 is a simple waterproof digital camera. The image quality it produces is simple, with the camera’s features being simple, too. It’s a basic digital camera for novice photographers who like to go on hikes now and then. It definitely doesn’t compare to the Pentax Optio W90, but with a retail price of £111.90 is definitely the better budget rugged digital camera.

  1. Marco Says:

I bought it some weeks ago.
This camera has a problem that nobody seems to notice.
Try this: record a HD video than play it on your PC using VLC or Quicktime, you will see a 8 pixels black vertical stripe on the right of the movie.
Don’t use windows media player because it play the video with a black frame around the video.
    Best regards
