The Canon PowerShot A495 is a recently released budget compact digital camera sporting a 10-megapixel camera sensor and 3.3x optical zoom lens. It’s been dubbed an entry-level digital camera increasing the ever extensive range of beginner’s digital cameras available from Canon. This also means that the Canon camera features some cool automatic functions to have anyone snapping away in no time.
Simple design and handling
When it comes to the overall design and handling of the Canon PowerShot A495, there’s nothing special to write home about here and the user of the budget digital camera will find the plastic exterior and layout of the controls on the camera to be average but not disappointing. Canon have, however, made the plastic, bulky exterior of the compact digital camera to look rather funky with its two-tone colour scheme and the A495 is available in either blue, red or silver. The camera also feels solid in hand, which is rather pleasing and the layout of all the controls on the back of the camera makes the A495 a very accessible camera.

Features mostly automatic
Looking at the features the Canon PowerShot A495 comes with, we find a 10-megapixel camera sensor coupled with 3.3 optical zoom lens with 37-122mm focal range, 35mm equivalent. This should allow more than enough photographic capabilities for the novice photographer, though the power of the zoom might be a little on the weak side. There’s no viewfinder, as it is with most modern compact digital cameras, and the A495 comes with 2.5-inch LCD screen to frame and review images or videos.
The Canon compact digital camera also comes with a video capture mode; however video is captured in VGA, which may be a turn-off for some people who become acclimatised to HD video capture. Also making the A405 one of the easiest camera’s to use on the market, Canon have added a flurry of modes, AF mode, scene mode, Face Detection technology and motion detection technology on top of other special effects modes, making the A495 a lot of fun for anyone who uses it. The Canon digital camera also comes with an ISO sensitivity range of ISO 80 – 1600 and comes with other exposure settings to deliver very acceptable images.
Surprising image quality
When it comes to image quality, the Canon PowerShot A495 is all about consistency, and strangely enough delivers an image quality which surpasses its budget digital camera tag. Given that the A495 does do all the work when it comes to getting the settings right for that perfect shot, it seems that Canon’s DIGIC III image processor really works. Images come out well exposed, with colours looking natural and also coming out with reasonable sharpness. Remembering that the A495 doesn’t have the strongest zoom lens, issues of distortion don’t creep up that much except when at full zoom which would be silly to use for this type of camera anyway. Noise shows up ISO400 and only gets really worse at ISO1600, but overall, the Canon compact digital camera delivers okay image quality given its budget and entry-level status.

Overall, the Canon PowerShot A495 is a budget digital camera which does everything automatically for the user and also punches a few notches above its weight when it comes to image quality. Having no HD movie mode might a little disappointing, but you might be surprised at how well the A495 has been built to meet its price point of £79.76. This means that Canon camera provides some exceptional value for money and may be the perfect starter digital camera.

I’m really agree to what you said. This camera is truly amazing for the quality of image. When I tell my friends that used sophisticated cameras (Lumix L5 – Canon s90 – canon g12) laughed. When he saw the images have been disturbed and no longer smile. Sure, the Canon A490 (495) lacks many things, but it has the most important thing: the superb quality of pictures and this is enough to consider it a great camera.
