The Casio EX-FH100 is about offering photographers of any skill level the most photographic capabilities with its high zoom and high speed shooting.

The EX-FH100 comes with a 10-megapixel back-lit camera sensor and 10x optical zoom ultra-wide lens. However, where the Casio really shines is when it comes to its high spend continuous shooting capabilities. It can record high-speed movies at 1,000fps, 420fps, 240fps, or 120fps in full HD at 720p, which should make for a real treat. An HDMI port is also included, as well as RAW image support.

Well built and designed

The Casio EX-FH100 is a well built camera which looks good too with its black metal exterior. The Casio compact digital camera is also comfortably sized, fitting in the palm of one’s hands. The controls on the camera are well laid out and also minimal, with the EX-FH100 featuring 13 controls in total, making the Casio digital camera very easy to use. However, the minimal number of controls is no dampener on the number of functions the Casio camera comes with.

The front of the camera is rather simple, with the zoom lens and protruding handgrip dominating the front of the camera. The back of the camera is also rather simple with the large 3-inch LCD screen dominating here, while at the same time not leading to the back of the camera being cluttered at all, with the navigation pad and other controls adjacent to the large LCD screen. Overall, the EX-FH100 is well built and well designed, making it a very accessible compact digital camera.

Cool features

Looking at the features the Casio EX-FH100 comes with, we find a 10-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS camera sensor coupled with a 10x optical zoom ultra-wide lens with a focal range of 24-240mm, 35mm equivalent. This allows the ever versatile digital camera to shoot an amazing 40fps as the camera begins capturing images with shutter release depressed halfway, and Casio call it their Prerecord Continuous Shutter feature.

Other features on the camera include high-speed Night scene, Lighting, Anti-shake and Portrait scene modes. The Casio compact digital camera also doesn’t come with an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and images are framed and reviewed using the camera’s 3-inch LCD screen. The EX-FH100 can record video in HD at 720p which is a real bonus at different speeds thanks to its high speed shooting mechanism. Videos are also recorded with stereo sound for a better result.

Disappointing image quality

When it comes to image quality the Casio compact digital camera delivers good images. However, noise is the Casio EX-FH100’s biggest enemy, with softer images being produced at ISO 200, and noise becoming visually evident at ISO 400. Noise also progressively worsens as the ISO speed increases. Though colour comes out okay, the images produced by the EX-FH100 do require some sharpening. The built-in flash works well indoors and the Casio digital camera handles itself like a pro at night. It does, however, struggle when shooting in Macro mode, only being able to focus from 7cm away. Overall, the image quality produced by the Casio EX-FH100 is okay, but disappointing at times. However, its video capabilities make up for everything the camera lacks when shooting stills.

The Casio EX-FH100 is a very flexible and versatile camera thanks to its high speed and high zoom capability. It comes with a large number of features, which disappointingly don’t make up for the camera’s below average image quality. With a retail price of £243, the EX-FH100 could make for a good choice for those who like interesting cameras with lots of features.
