Casio Exilim EX-G1 Review

The Casio EX-G1 is built really tough

The Casio EX-G1 is a rugged digital camera from Casio that is also the world’s slimmest rugged compact digital camera, measuring in at 0.78 inches. It comes with a 12-megapixel camera sensor and a 3x internal zoom lens. The EX-G1 is also waterproof, dustproof, freeze-proof and shock resistant, making it the perfect companion for summer hiking and trips to the beach.

Built tough

Given the Casio EX-G1 is made to withstand tough conditions, the EX-G1 comes with a tough outer shell. The EX-G1 also looks quirky and fun with its two-tone exterior which is available in either black or red. The Casio digital camera’s body is unconventionally shaped, being wider at one end than the other, although this doesn’t stop the rugged digital camera from feeling firm and comfortable in hand.

The front of the camera looks jagged and cool due to the camera’s weird shape, but only the lens and built-in flash are on the front of the camera. The back of the camera seems to have a lot going on and there’s also no viewfinder – pics will have to be framed using the 2.5-inch LCD screen. The controls for the camera are then laid out on the back and the side of the camera making them easy to use at times, but rather difficult to find sometimes, too.

Cool features

When it comes to features, the Casio EX-G1 comes with 12.1 effective megapixels and a 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor coupled with a 3x internal zoom lens with a focal range of 38-112mm which won’t disappoint when it comes to taking simple images. The EX-G1 is also waterproof down to 3 meters for an hour, can be dropped from 2.13 meters, and survive freezing temperatures of down to -10°C. The rugged digital camera also features interval shooting and interesting multi image capture feature. It comes with an extensive AF mode, and an Auto Best Shot scene mode. The EX-G1 also comes with a video capture mode, capturing video in VGA at a resolution of 640×480.

Disappointing image quality

The Casio EX-G1 produces images of below average quality, unfortunately. The colours seem washed out at times and the camera also struggles when shooting in low light conditions. The rugged digital camera does, however, keep noise at bay until ISO 800, with images only experiencing softer edges at higher ISO sensitivities. The zoom function also only makes matters worse on the EX-G1, with images experiencing lots of distortion.

Overall, when it comes to the Casio EX-G1 it seems that the consumer will be paying for the camera’s rugged features rather than image quality. With a retail price of £172.95, it’s still an okay camera but definitely not for those who are really picky about getting the best image quality.
