The Canon PowerShot A3100 replaces the Canon PowerShot A2100 as the digital camera to lead the budget Canon PowerShot digital camera range. The A3100 comes with a 12.1-megapixel sensor and a 4x optical zoom lens and also comes with lightweight and sporty body making the Canon compact digital camera a take-anywhere digital camera.

Simple design, but uncomfortable handling

The Canon compact digital camera is a good looking digital camera, coming with a basic and stylish design. The Canon PowerShot A3100 is not a comfortable digital camera to use, though, coming with no handgrip and only a smoothed out section for holding it when shooting. The front of the camera is simple, holding only the camera’s lens and built-in flash. On the back of the camera we find the camera’s external controls, which are well positioned and easy to use, making up for the digital camera’s lack of a rubberised hand-grip. On the back of the Canon digital camera we also find the camera’s LCD screen, next to the device’s navigation pad and other controls. The A3100 also only comes with 11 controls in total, keeping the Canon digital camera easy to use and simple.

Features

The Canon PowerShot A3100 IS comes with a 12.1 effective megapixel CCD-Chip 1/2, 3″ camera sensor coupled with a 4x optical zoom lens with a focal range of 35-140mm, 35mm equivalent. The A3100 also comes with automatic image stabilisation and an extensive Smart Auto mode together with an Easy mode, making the digital camera even easier to use. Canon has also included Scene Detection technology, Face Detection, Face Tracking technology, FaceSelf-Timer together with i-Contrast, Auto Red Eye technology and Canon’s DIGIC III image processing system. The digital camera comes with no view finder, and the camera’s 2.7-inch LCD screen is used to frame and review images. The A3100 can also record video in VGA.

Produces images of good quality

When it comes to image quality, the Canon PowerShot model is quite the capable digital camera, producing images of a generally good quality. The digital camera does, however, struggle with noise at ISO 400, with images experiencing increased noise and softness as the ISO sensitivity is increased. The Canon compact digital camera works well indoors and in low light environments. The A3100 also worked well at night, with the images coming out well exposed most of the time. The digital camera’s Macro mode performance also works well.

The Canon PowerShot A3100 currently retails for £107.91. It’s a really good budget digital camera which makes for the best choice for a versatile household digital camera. There’s nothing really special about the camera, but it provides a great deal of photographic capabilities.
