The term bridge camera came around in the late 80’s, as they bridged the gap between SLR Cameras and point and shoot cameras. Although the majority of bridge cameras won’t have interchangeable lenses, they do in fact normally have zoom capabilities of over 400mm. The term Superzoom is often connected, with bridge camera for that reason.
As with DSLR cameras or any camera for that fact, it’s important not to be sucked into the idea of megapixles meaning quality. The sensor size and lens quality are much bigger factors when choosing a new camera.
